Question 1

What kind of photograph works best for a dog portrait?

Accepted Answer

One that shows your dog's character. Something in the pose, the way they hold their head, or their expression that's unmistakably them. Good detail helps, especially around the eyes and fur, and natural light is better than flash. But please don't worry about it being a professional photo; just send me what you have and I'll tell you honestly what will work.

Question 2

Can you draw a dog that has passed away?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and these are some of the most important drawings I do. I'll work from whatever photographs you have, and if the best one is old or a little unclear, send it anyway. I'll let you know gently and honestly whether I can draw from it, and I'll take the greatest care over the portrait.

Question 3

Can I be in the portrait with my dog?

Accepted Answer

Of course. People with their dogs are among my favourite drawings. The portrait is priced at the animal rate for the total number of subjects, so one person and one dog counts as two subjects (£119 at 8″ × 12″).

Question 4

Can you draw two dogs from different photographs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. I can combine dogs from separate photos into a single drawing for an extra £20, as long as the photographs are suitable. I'll check them for you and let you know before anything is booked in.

Question 5

How long does a dog portrait take?

Accepted Answer

I generally complete drawings within four weeks of the deposit, usually less. If you have a date in mind, a birthday or Christmas for example, let me know when you enquire and I'll make sure the timing works. My Priority Service (£20) can complete a drawing within a week, subject to my workload at the time.

Question 6

What's included in the price?

Accepted Answer

Every portrait includes a free black card picture mount, which adds a 2″ border around the drawing. UK P&P is £15 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, a guaranteed next-day, signed-for service. If you'd like to print your own copies, I can email you a high-resolution scan of the finished drawing for £10, with full reproduction rights.
