Every price is on this page. Portraits start at £89, every drawing comes with a free black card mount, and UK postage is £15 by Royal Mail Special Delivery. There’s nothing to add on afterwards.
Sizes
I work at two standard sizes. I give the measurements in inches, with the nearest A-size in brackets, because most people find one or the other more familiar.
- 8″ × 12″ (approximately A4), portrait or landscape
- 12″ × 16″ (approximately A3), portrait or landscape
If your photograph would suit a square, I’ll say so when I see it. A 10″ × 10″ square costs the same as the 8″ × 12″, and a 14″ × 14″ the same as the 12″ × 16″. There’s no extra charge for choosing a square; it’s simply a different shape for the same amount of drawing.
Which size to choose usually depends on how much is in the photograph. One or two subjects sit comfortably at 8″ × 12″. Three or more, or a photograph with a lot of fine detail, gives me more room to work at 12″ × 16″. If you’re not sure, send me the photograph and I’ll tell you what I’d recommend.

Vehicles are priced the same as people: £89 at 8″ × 12″ and £109 at 12″ × 16″ for a single subject. That covers cars, motorbikes, lorries, tractors, trains and aircraft.

Every animal is priced the same way, whether it’s a hamster or a horse.

These cost a little more, and it’s worth explaining why. With a person, an animal or a car, I usually draw the subject and leave the background white. With a house, a landscape or a boat, the setting is part of the picture, so I’m drawing the whole scene rather than one subject. Buildings in particular are the most detailed and time-consuming work I take on: every window, every course of brick or stone.
Groups, and Mixing People with Pets
Each additional subject adds £20, whatever the subject is. So three children at 8″ × 12″ is £129, and two dogs at the same size is £119.
If the drawing includes any animal, the whole portrait is priced at the animal rate. So you and your dog together is two subjects at the animal rate, £119 at 8″ × 12″. Two people and a dog is three subjects at the animal rate, £139. It’s simpler than it sounds, and I’ll always confirm the exact price before anything is booked in.
There’s a practical reason people and animals are capped at four subjects on the smaller size. Each subject you add makes every face smaller, which leaves me less room for the blending and fine detail that gets a good likeness. Vehicles aren’t capped in the same way, because a little less detail on a wheel arch matters far less than it does on a face.
What’s Included
- A free black card picture mount with every portrait, ready for framing. It adds a 2″ border, so an 8″ × 12″ drawing becomes 12″ × 16″ overall. If you’d rather have the drawing unmounted, just say.
- A sample scan for your approval before you pay the balance. You see the finished drawing and confirm you’re happy with it first.
- My advice on the photograph, honestly given, before anything is booked in.

Postage
UK: £15. Royal Mail Special Delivery, guaranteed by 1pm the next working day and signed for. Your portrait is packed flat with protective card so it arrives exactly as it left me.
Worldwide: quoted at the time. I post internationally and have sent portraits all over the world. Tell me where you are and I’ll give you the exact cost with your quote.
Paying
I’ll email you an invoice, payable by PayPal or bank transfer. A 50% deposit books your drawing in, and the balance is due once you’ve seen the finished portrait and you’re happy with it. Nothing is committed until you’ve agreed the price.
Pricing Questions
How much does a pencil portrait cost?
From £89 for one person at 8″ × 12″, or £99 for one pet. Each additional subject adds £20, and the larger 12″ × 16″ size adds £20 to any price. Every portrait includes a free black card mount, and UK postage is £15.
Why do pet portraits cost more than portraits of people?
Fur takes longer to draw than skin and hair. Getting a coat to look right, with its markings and the way the light sits on it, is where most of the time in an animal portrait goes, so there’s a £10 difference at each size.
How much is a portrait of me and my dog?
£119 at 8″ × 12″, or £139 at 12″ × 16″. Any drawing that includes an animal is priced at the animal rate for the total number of subjects, and you and your dog is two subjects.
Is the picture mount really free?
Yes. Every portrait comes with a black card mount at no charge, cut and ready for framing. It’s not an upsell and there’s no version of the price without it.
Do you charge extra for a square drawing?
No. A 10″ × 10″ square costs the same as an 8″ × 12″, and a 14″ × 14″ the same as a 12″ × 16″. If your photograph would look better square, I’ll suggest it, and it won’t change the price.
When do I pay?
A 50% deposit books your drawing in, and the balance is due after you’ve seen a scan of the finished portrait and confirmed you’re happy. I’ll email an invoice for each, payable by PayPal or bank transfer.
